Barre chords

Barre chords

Barre chords (also known as Barre chords and bar chords, but more commonly spelled as "Barre") are a type of guitar chord, where one or more fingers are used to press down multiple strings across the guitar fingerboard (like a bar pressing down the strings). Barring the strings enables the guitarist to play a chord not restricted by the tones of the guitar's open strings. Barre chords are often referred to as "moveable" chords, as they can be moved up and down the neck as needed. They are commonly used in most popular and classical music and are frequently used in combination with "open" or standard guitar chords. They are typically used for more complex chord voicing’s and playing in keys not suitable for the more basic open chords of the first position of a standard-tuned guitar.
Fretting a Barre chord is the same as retuning the guitar a number of half-steps higher, playing the original open chord, and then tuning the guitar back down. Its primary purpose is to shift any of the open string chords an arbitrary number of half steps up the neck of the guitar, similar to the use of a capo. For example, playing the E major chord with a bar across the fifth fret is equivalent to playing an A major chord, five half steps higher than E.
Tone is affected by a Barre chord. Because the strings are no longer open, they do not resonate as brightly or long as an open chord. The sound is muted by the pressure placed on the bar; heavy pressure in the center of the frets produces less muting. Therefore, when playing Barre chords, it is important to practice maintaining adequate pressure, as the technique is tiring for beginners and the strings dig into the flesh of the uncalloused finger.

Melodic Minor Scale

Much of jazz harmony is based on the Melodic Minor Scale, one difference being that the "descending" version of the scale used in classical harmony is not used. The modes of the (ascending) melodic minor scale are the basis for much of jazz improvisation and are variously named as below, using the key of C-minor as an example:

Melodic minor scale tone
Characteristic chord in C-minor
Scale Tones (chord tones in bold)
Scale Name(s)
- C
Cm(∆)
C D Eb F G A B
melodic minor
- D
Dm7sus(9)
D Eb F G A B C
Phrygian 6 or Dorian 2
- E
E∆(5)
Eb F G A B C D
Lydian b5
- F
F7(11)
F G A B C D Eb
Mixolydian 4
- G
G(-6)
G A B C D E F
Mixolydian 6 or "Hindu"
- A
A
A B C D E F G
Locrian 2
- B
B7(alt)
B C D E F G A
Altered, diminished whole tone, or Locrian 4

The chord in particular is rich with alterations. As it contains the notes and alterations (, 9, m3/9, 11, 5/11, 13, m7), it is particularly important in the jazz harmonic idiom, notably as a chord in a minor key. For our example key of C-minor, the V chord is G7, so the improviser would draw upon the G7 altered scale (mode of the Ab melodic minor). A complete -- progression in C-minor might suggest the following:

ii
D
D Locrian 2 (mode of the F melodic minor scale)
V
G7(alt)
G altered scale (mode of the A melodic minor scale)
I
Cm(∆)
C melodic minor (mode of the C melodic minor scale)

Scale:-

A succession of single notes, lying within an octave, the notes arranged in order of pitch, moving upwards or downwards. There are many different kinds of scale on which music can be based. Western music has largely been based on two main kinds of scale: Major, and Minor.
The characteristic sound of any scale is determined by its number of steps, these steps known as Intervals. An interval is the distance, or difference in pitch between two notes. The notes may be sounded simultaneously, making a “Harmonic Interval”; or they may be sounded one after another, as in a Melody, making a “Melodic interval”.
All scales are simply subsets of the chromatic scale. Most scales have 7 different notes, although some have 5, 6, or 8. The simplest scale, which will be used as an example for the discussion of chords, is the C major scale, which is "C, D, E, F, G, A, B". A major scale is defined by the intervals between these notes: "(T T S T T T S)", where "T" indicates Tones (whole step) and "S" indicates Semitones (half steps).
Example:-
Chromatic Scale is…..
C      C#    D      D#    E      F      F#    G      G#    A      A#    B      C.

Tone - Next to next.
Semitones - Just Next.

Major Scale Interval Is:-
T      T      S      T     T     T     S.
To memorize, it is Double T S, Triple T S.

Minor Scale Interval Is:-
T      S       T      T      S       T      T.
To memorize, it is T S T - T S T - T.

There are three types of scale category.
1.     Chromatic,
2.    Diatonic, and
3.    Synthetic.
Different kind of scales:-

Major Scale Modes, Melodic Minor Modes, Symmetric Scales, Pentatonic Scales, Blues Scales, Bebop Scales, Harmonic Scales, Exotic Scales, and Miscellaneous.
